Program is not authorized to operate on this media.
This article is obsolete as it no longer applies to products we currently sell. It is included here for archival purposes only.
Symptoms:
- A message stating that "this program is not
authorized to operate on this media" is displayed whenever you try to
run Term-PAK.
- The first four digits of the error code are
7043.
Cause:
The authorization information for Term-PAK
has been lost or damaged on the hard disk.
- You restored your hard drive from a tape backup
or other backup device.
-
You "optimized" your hard drive with a defragmentation
utility. Optimization generally won't damage your authorization UNLESS
you have configured your defragmentation utility to optimize files that
are marked System, Read-Only, and Hidden.
You are trying to run
a "copy" of Term-PAK or the program was installed from a copy
of the master disk(s).
The Term-PAK
installation did not complete normally.
You don't have any more
installs left.
Resolution:
Term-PAK was working until I optimized my hard
drive.
Term-PAK uses a special authorization file to ensure
that the installed copy of the software is legitimate and not a bootleg copy.
This file has special attributes that typically prevent any modifications to the
file. These attributes are also used to ensure that the file is not moved once
it is placed on the hard drive. It is possible, however, to move the file to a
new location on the hard drive with certain defragmentation utilities. Normally,
these utilities do not move files that are marked System, Read Only, or Hidden.
By adjusting the properties or options that a defragmentation utility uses, a
user may override the default settings and therefore cause any and / or all
files on the hard drive to be moved. If the Term-PAK authorization file is
moved, the program will stop working and you will receive the "not
authorized" message.
If this describes your problem, there are two things
that need to be done. First, the authorization needs to be restored to the hard
drive so that the program will work again. Second, the defragmentation utility
must be configured so that it will not create this problem in the future.
Repair:
- Select the Windows Start button.
- Select Programs.
- Select MS-DOS Prompt or Command Prompt from the
list of menu items.
- You should see a DOS window on the screen. Press
the Alt and Enter keys at the same time to switch to full screen mode. (If
the DOS session came up in full screen mode, you do not need to perform this
step.)
- Insert your Term-PAK disk number 1 into drive A.
- Log on to drive A by typing A: and then pressing
Enter. You should see the A:\ prompt.
- Type EVMOVE C: A: and then press Enter. (Note:
There is a single space between EVMOVE and C: and a single space between C:
and A:. Also, make sure you type a colon : and not a semi-colon ; ) When the
program asks you to verify the operation, press Y to confirm. You will more
than likely receive an error. This is normal since the authorization file on
the hard drive has been damaged. This procedure will remove the damaged
file.
- Type EVMOVE A: C: and then press Enter. When the
program asks you to verify the operation, press Y to confirm. If the
operation is successful, you will receive a message to that effect. If you
receive an error, please click here.
- Type Exit to return to Windows.
- Remove your Term-PAK disk from drive A.
- Run Term-PAK by double clicking on the Term-PAK
icon.
- When all else
fails.
Prevention:
You must now reconfigure your defragmentation utility so
that it does not cause this problem in the future. There are two ways that this
can be done.
- You can configure your defragmentation utility so
that it does not modify or move files that are marked System, Read Only, or
Hidden. (See your defragmentation utility's documentation for additional
information.)
- Or, you can configure your defragmentation utility
so that it does not modify or move files that reside in the Termpak folder
on your hard drive. (See your defragmentation utility's documentation for
additional information.)

special authorization file to ensure that the installed copy of the software is
legitimate and not a bootleg copy. Because of this, copies of the authorization
file will not work.

- Remove your Term-PAK disk from drive A.
- Run Term-PAK by double clicking on the Term-PAK
icon.
- When all else

Prevention:
- Un-install Term-PAK to recover the authorization
from the hard drive before restoring backup copies of Term-PAK from a tape
drive or other backup media. (Run the Term-PAK setup utility on the Term-PAK
master disk #1 and then select Un-install from the setup menu.)
- Restore your files to the hard drive from the tape
backup or other backup media.
- Re-install Term-PAK. (Run the Term-PAK setup
utility on the Term-PAK master disk #1.) The setup utility will not replace
newer files in the Term-PAK folder. Therefore, any changes that you have
made to the Term-PAK database or any new designs that you have saved will
not be overwritten.
I just purchased Term-PAK and I receive the security error
when I try to run the program.
Another Windows
process or application is more than likely interferring with the Term-PAK setup
utility. Please refer to the following article on installation related problems.
If the Term-PAK setup utility completed successfully and
you still receive the "authorization error", please try the
following.
- Select the Windows Start button.
- Select Programs.
- Select MS-DOS Prompt or Command Prompt from the
list of menu items.
- You should see a DOS window on the screen. Press
the Alt and Enter keys at the same time to switch to full screen mode. (If

Term-PAK works fine on my other computers but I receive the
security error when I try and run it from this computer.
When you purchase
Term-PAK, you are licesened to run the program on a single computer. If you want
to run the program on another computer, you will first need to un-install
Term-PAK from the first computer and then re-install it on the second computer.
The install / un-install operation is accessed from the Setup program on the
Term-PAK master disk #1.
Term-PAK will
only work when I have the Term-PAK master disk #1 in the disk
drive.
When you run
Term-PAK, the program looks in the Term-PAK folder for the Term-PAK
authorization file to determine if the program is a legitimate copy. If Term-PAK
finds the file and the file checks out okay, the program will run normally. If
the authorization file cannot be found in the Term-PAK folder, or if the
authorization file is damaged, Term-PAK will search ALL drives on the computer
for the authorization file. This includes floppy drives. Since the Term-PAK
master disk #1 always has a valid copy of the authorization file on it, Term-PAK
will eventually find this file if the master disk is in the floppy
drive.
To correct this situation, you must replace the
missing or defective authorization on the hard drive.

Transferring Authorization
Errors
If you receive an error when trying
to move the authorization file from the diskette to the hard drive, it could
mean one of several things.
- The write-protect tab on the
diskette is open. Close the little slide-switch on the diskette and then try
again.
- If you receive an error code that begins with 7030, it
means that you do not have any more installs left on the master disk. You
will need to contact customer service to request a reset code.
