Soundcard Removal and Installation

Remove any existing soundcard drivers.

  1. Double-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. Double-click on the Control Panel icon.
  3. Double-click on the System icon.
  4. Click on the Device Manager tab.
  5. Double-click on the "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" folder.
  6. Highlight each of the old drivers and then press the Remove button.
  7. After all of the old drivers have been removed, press OK.
Remove the old soundcard.

  1. Shut down your computer and turn it off.
  2. Open your computer case.
  3. Remove your old soundcard.
Install the Soundblaster 16 soundcard.

  1. Install the Soundblaster 16 soundcard.
  2. Close your computer case.
  3. Turn your computer on.
  4. Windows will detect the new hardware and may ask you to insert the Windows CD.
  5. When Windows is finished loading, insert the Soundblaster 16 soundcard and follow the on-screen installation instructions.
What to do if your soundcard is built-in to the motherboard.

  1. Remove the existing soundcard drivers as described above.
  2. Re-boot your computer.
  3. As soon as your computer starts to re-boot, you must enter the BIOS setup utility. (A message telling you which key to press to enter the BIOS utility will be displayed when your computer starts to boot. It is normally ESC, DEL, or F1 but may be something different on your computer.)
  4. There should be a page called, "On-board peripherals" or something to that effect. You are looking for anything that is related to the on-board soundcard.
  5. You should find an option to disable the on-board soundcard.
  6. Disable the on-board soundcard, save the changes, exit and reboot.
  7. Windows should NOT detect new hardware. If it does, then you haven't disabled the on-board soundcard.
  8. After Windows is finished loading, shut down the computer and install the Soundblaster 16 soundcard as described above.
